Maribeth became familiar with
Precious Metal Clay while living in Chicago in 2003. She signed
up for a jewelry class offered by Evanston Fine Art Center and
found herself working with clay which contains finely ground
silver dust. When the product is fired in a small kiln (1470
degrees), the clay burns off and the silver chards solder
together. This creates a piece of fine silver jewelry, which is
.999 pure silver. (Sterling is .925) This medium was developed
by Mitsubishi Materials Corporation about ten years ago. More
information on this medium can be found at PMCGuild.com.
Maribeth loves this medium as
it’s easy to use and very forgiving. She has found it to be a
great hobby for several years now, since moving to North
Florida. Although she is still in the IT industry, she finds
working with PMC to be nice balance for her creative side.
As a certified PMC instructor,
you will find her classes listed on the PMC Guild website as
well as the bead chick’s site. Maribeth also teaches in
Gainesville and is a volunteer teacher at a residential center
for the mentally ill in Maitland. She finds the volunteer work
very rewarding, as the residents are thrilled with the beautiful
pieces of jewelry they produce.
She has recently founded the
North Florida PMC Chapter, and plans for the group to attend
the PMC Conference in Indiana during the summer of 2008. Artists
from around the world gather and share ideas/techniques about
this unique medium. |
