Each Wednesday in July, from 10:30 to noon, our classes will be especially designed for kids, age 7 and up!

July 26 and August 30 the bead chick, and other shops in uptown stay open until 9:00 pm. you can visit with local artists who are introducing their work. The bead chick invites customers to set up about 4 pm and sell your own creations!

JULY CLASSES

  July 1 (Tues, 6:30 - 9pm) Free Form Wire Wrap: Have you found a great shell on the beach you want to wear as a pendant? Learn how to encase an object in wire, and make it pretty too. $25, includes your wire, bring your own shell, piece of beach glass, or pick one up here at the bead chick! $10 deposit.

July 2 (Weds, 10:30 - noon) Wire Work for Kids! Bring in a shell, and we’ll wrap it, or a shark’s tooth, and we’ll make a cool pendant. You can do it! You will learn about the tools you need to use, and how to wrap an object so it will be secure and pretty. $25, includes supplies; $10 deposit. Space is limited to 10.

July 3 (Thurs, 6:30 - 9pm) Domino Art: Elle Barry has mastered the art of alcohol ink application on dominoes, and will teach you how to make an elegant pendant. $35, includes supplies; $10 deposit.

July 6 (Sun, 1-4 pm) PMC and the North Florida PMC Guild: Exciting new art media, Precious Metal Clay (PMC) opens the world of silver-smithing to the layperson! Maribeth Whitney is a certified instructor and gifted teacher, and will lead you through the simple process of creating your own masterpiece in silver. $95 for beginners, includes a 28 gram pkg of clay.

July 7 (Mon, 10am - 2pm) Enameling: Els Heber instructs the varied and wonderful ways to make enameled pieces. If you are new to this, she will start you out with a small cloisonné piece, which in a future class she will teach you how to bezel. The class topic changes each week, and there is a $25 fee for each session. Call or come in for more details and to sign up.

July 8 (Tues, 6:30 - 9pm) Art Dolls! This month we’re making a mermaid, with polymer clay scales, torso and arms, and a beaded hairdo. Your imagination is needed, some sewing skill and a sense of humor. $40, includes the pre-colored and conditioned clay and arms; $10 deposit.

July 9 (Weds, 10:30 - noon) Beading Basics for Kids! We will all make a pair of earrings and bracelet, and you will learn how to do the wire wrap and crimp yourself! $25, includes $10 in beading supplies; $10 deposit required. Class size limited to 10.

July 10 (Thurs, 6:30 - 9pm): Cold Shop Silver Smithing: If you have mastered basic beading, then you are probably looking for a new direction for your designs - this is it! Learn how to bend and manipulate heavier gauge wire into pendants, ear wires and other components that will personalize your jewelry. We will also hammer silver blanks, and learn to use punches and stamps for embellishments. $35, includes all supplies; $10 deposit.

July 14 (Mon, 10am - 2pm) Enameling (continued!) - with Els Heber, see the July 7 details. New people can join in at any time.

July 15 (Tues, 6:30 - 9pm) Beading Basics: This is the first class you should take if you are new to the world of beading! You will learn two techniques: 1) The "hangman’s noose" wire wrap technique used to make earrings and other "dangles", and 2) Crimping, which is how to apply a clasp to your necklace, bracelet or anklet! Plus all about the tools and other basic materials involved in making your own accessories. You will leave class with a completed pair of earrings and a bracelet. $25, includes a $10 bead allowance; $10 deposit required.

July 16 (Weds, 10:30 - noon) Key Chains for Kids! Key chains are the rage, and not just for keys anymore! Embellish your purses, backpacks, and clothes…make lots of gifts for your friends and family. $25, includes supplies for 2 key chains; $10 deposit (class size limited to 10).

July 17 (Thurs, 6:30 - 9pm) Polymer Clay - New Beginnings! If you have not played with this fun media, this is your chance to get familiar with some of the myriad ways it can be used. Nancy McShane will teach you all the basics of conditioning, color blending, cutting, shaping, and baking this wonderful stuff. "Faux gemstones" are her specialty, but there is no end to what you can do! $35, includes your clay. Bring your own pasta machine and tools if you have them, but we can supply you too. $10 deposit.

July 19 (Saturday, 1-4) Bird’s Nest Ring: Melissa Stevison comes to us from Orlando to teach this beautiful wire-wrapped ring. Her special touch with this ring will inspire you to learn more! $50, includes supplies; $10 deposit.

July 21 (Mon, 10am-2pm) Enameling (continued!) - with Els Heber, see the July 7 details. New people can join in at any time.

July 22 (Tues, 6:30 - 9pm) Puffy Heart: Nancy McShane will teach this beautiful crystal heart, and makes this right-angle-weave beauty a snap to learn. $35, includes written instruction sheet: $10 deposit (crystal kits extra).

July 23 (Weds, 10:30 - noon) Daisy Chains for Kids! These have to be the cutest seed-bead strands ever! You can make them as bracelets, anklets, even eye-glass chains! $25, includes all your supplies; $10 deposit (class size limited to 10).

July 24 (Thurs, 6:30 - 9pm) Cha-Cha Bracelet! Yes, it’s back, by popular demand. Is there no end to how different each one can be? Very full and fluffy, this bracelet is a very simple concept, and can be made as elaborate and personalized as you want. $35, includes basic supplies; bring your own bead and component stash too. $10 deposit.

July 25-26 (Friday and Saturday) FANCY BEADS TRUNK SHOW, FEATURING VENETIAN GLASS! A very special showing of the best glass beads in the world, these beads will be on sale for just 2 days! Glass work was perfected on the isle of Murano, outside of the city of Venice, Italy, centuries ago, and is still where glass blowing and bead-making students the world over go to learn how to perfect their craft. Don’t miss this one! 10-6 Friday, and 10-9 Saturday.

July 28 (Mon, 10am-2pm) Enameling (continued!) - with Els Heber, see the July 7 details. New people can join in at any time.

July 29 (Tues, 6:30-9pm) Charmed, I’m Sure! Let’s Solder - make cute little picture frames with our favorite miniaturized portraits of loved ones and favorite things. We will also use chain and learn the "hangman’s noose" wire wrap technique used to hang pendants. You will need to have your own soldering iron, photocopies of favorite pictures, and basic jewelry making tools (if you have them). $35, includes solder, flux, glass and wire: $10 deposit.

July 30 (Weds, 10:30am-noon) Loom Work for Kids! An ancient art form, loom-woven beadwork can keep you busy for hours! And then you can convert your artwork into a bracelet, pair of earrings, even a belt. $35, includes take-home loom and beads: $10 deposit (class size limited to 8).

July 31 (Thurs, 6:30 - 9pm) Peyote Blessing Bag: You will learn how to do a circular peyote stitch, which will eventually turn into a precious tiny bag you can wear as a pendant! This is an easy stitch to learn, and can be forever personalized and used in so many applications. $40, includes bead kit and supplies; $10 deposit.

 

AUGUST CLASSES

  August 3 (Sunday, 1-5pm) PMC and the North Florida PMC Guild: Exciting new art media, Precious Metal Clay (PMC) opens the world of silver-smithing to the layperson! Maribeth Whitney is a certified instructor and gifted teacher, and will lead you through the simple process of creating your own masterpiece in silver. Maribeth and Peggy Ward will have just returned from attending the 2008 biennial PMC World Conference, so be prepared for an overdose of enthusiasm , new ideas and products!!! $95 for beginners, includes a 28 gram pkg of clay; $35 per session if you are bringing your own clay.

August 4 (Mon, 10am-2pm) Enameling (continued!) - with Els Heber, see the July 7 details. New people can join in at any time.

August 5 (Tues, 6:30 - 9pm) Polymer Clay - Peggy Ward will teach a technique or two in this marvelous media. If you are a beginner, welcome! If you are experienced, we will tailor the class to teach you a technique that you want to learn. $35, includes basic clay. BYOPasta Machine and tools, if you have them: $10 deposit.

August 6 (Weds, 10:30am - 12:30pm) Free Form Wire Wrap: This time the class will focus on how to securely wrap an object of your choice (Shell? Sea glass?) and also embellish it for beauty. $35, includes wire: $10 deposit.

August 7 (Thurs, 6:30 - 9pm) Woven Amulet Bag: We will construct our own simple loom with cardboard and string, and weave a precious tiny bag that you can wear as a pendant. Bring your own stash of fibers (there are incredible yarns available now!), fabrics, wire… $35, includes the rest of the supplies: $10 deposit.

August 11 (Mon, 10am-2pm) Enameling (continued!) - with Els Heber, see the July 7 details. New people can join in at any time.

August 12 (Tues, 6:30 - 9pm) Viking Knit: This stunning wire-weave is amazingly easy to make. You will learn how to construct your own loom, and all the details of finishing are included in this class. $40, includes copper wire and materials for the loom: $10 deposit.

August 13 (Weds, 10:30am - 12:30pm) Puffy Heart: Nancy McShane will teach this beautiful crystal heart, and makes this right-angle-weave beauty a snap to learn. We have pre-packaged crystal kits available, which have been discounted 20%! $35, includes written instruction sheet: $10 deposit.

August 14 (Thurs, 6:30 - 9pm) Basic Wire Work I: Links and Loops. It’s easy to make your own linked necklace or bracelet after you take this class! We will work on S-links, the "hangman’s noose", eye-links, and basic clasps in this class. Bring your own tools and ideas! $35, includes written instructions and copper wire: $10 deposit. (Wire Work II offered next week - Aug 21!)

August 18 (Mon, 10am-2pm) Enameling (continued!) - with Els Heber, see the July 7 details. New people can join in at any time.

August 19 (Tues, 6:30 - 9pm) No Reason to Fear Resin! In this class you will learn how to properly mix your 2-part epoxy resin, mold preparation, and how to prepare materials to imbed in your designs. We will make bottle-cap magnets/pins (bring your own miniaturized photos!), some molded pendants and learn finishing techniques. $35, includes supplies: $10 deposit.

August 20 (Weds, 10:30am-12:30pm) Bead Stitching with Nancy: Nancy teaches all the bead-weaving stitches: peyote, herringbone, brick stitch and right angle weave. Sign up to learn the stitch of your choice! $25 for the session; $10 deposit.

August 21 (Thurs, 6:30-9pm) Basic Wire Work II: Clasps, Ear-wires and Beads. This class will focus on learning how to fashion a more complicated clasp, some basic ear-wires and some wire-wrapped beads. Bring your own tools and ideas - $35, includes written instructions and copper wire: $10 deposit.

August 25 (Mon, 10am-2pm) ) Enameling (continued!) - with Els Heber, see the July 7 details. New people can join in at any time.

August 26 (Tues, 6:30-9pm) Shrink Plastic with Elle! This is such a great compliment to your creative jewelry components. Light-weight and so unique, there are myriad ways to use this fun material using rubber stamps, inks, chalks, colored pencils, texturing and more! $35, includes supplies: $10 deposit.

August 27 (Weds, 10:30am-12:30pm) Bead-Around-A-Cabochon: A "cabochon" is usually a stone with a flat side and a domed side. This can be glued on to an ultra suede backing and then seed beads are added with needle and thread. The results are glamorous and stunning! Nancy McShane leads this class and will inspire you with her creative approach and attention to detail. $30 class fee: $10 deposit.

August 28 (Thurs, 6:30-9pm) Herringbone Necklace: Nancy McShane has perfected this beautiful tubular necklace with different size seed beads, and will teach you the tricks of a tight stitch and secure finishing. $30, supplies extra: $10 deposit.
